16 foot "Sport Dory" by designed Jim Michalak

John Bell of Alabama built this fine example of Jim Michalak's Sport Dory design.  I was thinking of building one when I saw his for sale and snapped it up.  Didn't quite turn out to be a bargain as I suspect the extra drag of having two boats on the roof of our 82 Olds contributed to it's blowing the transmission later on the same day as I added the dory to the rooftop load. C'est la vie.

John did a great job building her and she is a dream to row,

Here's a few shots of me in Sportdory on the Intracoastal at Clearwater, FL.

The tough winter of 2004 was hard on SD, as she split a gunwale and both butt blocks on returning to Canada in April '04. Perhaps the dramatic change in temperature and humidity in only 24 hours from sun to frozen north. Any way, we epoxied the split, remade the butts and painted her royal blue with hammered bronze trim. The repaint was needed as she had a ton of barnacles and goo on her bottom from 4 months moored in salt water.
